2008/2009

In 2008, I…

  • studied abroad in Cape Town, South Africa for 3 months (program on comparative historical and current social justice movements in the U.S. and South Africa with community engagement focus)
  • highlights other than the program included seeing wild animals in real life, paragliding, skydiving, abseiling, cross country roadtrip on the other side of the road, bungy jumping from the highest bungy jump in the world and I got my first tattoo (Yeah, I had three months of “try crazy things I’ve never done before”.)
  • applied to grad school on a whim and got accepted
  • met C in London for our belated honeymoon where we explored London, Stonehenge and Bath
  • went to Dublin for the first time
  • returned to Seattle and “normal” school, worked on my senior thesis
  • took intensive summer Spanish
  • celebrated our “3/1 Anniversary” (3 years together, 1 year married)
  • graduated with my two bachelors degrees and a minor
  • stopped working at the young adult home.less shelter where I had worked for 2 years
  • started my dou.la business
  • joined my local post.partum dou.la org’s board of directors
  • certified as a post.partum dou.la and working lots of overnights
  • started my blog
  • began graduate school
  • started teaching kindergarten church school at my UU church
  • began working as an assistant for child.birth education classes
  • took a position as a consultant and trainer for my university’s Safe.Zones program
  • attended an anti-racism training for people working against LGBTQ bullying
  • agreed to co-chair the subcommittee on anti-racism within the above group
  • completed my first quarter of graduate school (and got an A)
  • lived through crazy Seattle snowstorm
  • purchased our sperm

In 2009, I want to…

  • start my winter quarter classes and stay focused on school
  • visit my family monthly
  • join a local gym and go regularly (both by myself and with C)
  • get into shape, increase my endurance
  • practice yoga and meditation regularly
  • continue learning about and implementing financial planning/management
  • blog regularly (minimum of 3 times per week) and write about topics of importance/greater relevance
  • try to have a consistent and good amount of  work hours (not too little and not too much)
  • become a child.birth educator
  • continue involvement in activities and positions that are rewarding (dou.la orgs, UU school, anti-racism committee, Maybe Baby group and potlucks, child.birth education series) and be selective about taking on new things so that I can focus on those that matter most
  • informational interviews and networking with people who have jobs I would consider doing after grad school
  • sew and knit more
  • swimming
  • read for pleasure more
  • listen to more music (instead of only NPR news) and go to more live music shows
  • take Kai on more regular and longer walks
  • minimize our possessions as much as possible and organize/prepare our home for better living and hopefully moving
  • learn more about the real estate process
  • go somewhere with C (even if it’s not far away or exotic) and just be together for a few days
  • enjoy the summer by doing more outdoor activities and exploring our NW region
  • plan and begin my graduate capstone project
  • start ttc
  • move into a new home (hopefully)
  • continue to prepare to be a mother

That seems do-able, right?
